Climb Every Mountain

I was the most special girl in all the world as I sat across the table from my mom and dad in the otherwise empty ice cream parlor. They had opened the door for just us after closing time because I was important. After all, I was the solo flutist at the school concert that evening!

My flute accompanied the solo vocalist for the final concert of the year. And, for both of us, our final concert at the elementary school with sixth grade graduation right around the corner. The year was 1966 and our class song, meant to inspire us, lifts my spirits to this day. “Climb Every Mountain” by Rodgers & Hammerstein

I’ll never know how my dad convinced the shop owner to stay late so I could have the best sundae ever made but he did. And I will always cherish the memory of sitting at that table sharing a sundae with my mom and dad. Being their special girl.
