Guitarist singing at a nightclub beneath a Johnny Alibi Live Tonight sign

The Animals

Not the four-legged kind. The band from the 1960s had always been one of my favorites as a teenager. Then, in 1990, after a long day of teaching my teenage daughter how to drive my stick-shift car, I joined some friends for a night of drinks and foolishness. The bartender was new to the job and anxious to keep us girls happy so the tequila flowed freely.

There was a live band at the far end of the club, barely audible from our booth over the cacophonous conversations. Then it was there – in my ear! “House of the Rising Sun” being performed by this funky little bar band. The song my high school friends belittled as not rock enough. The song that made me love the blues. The song that nobody ever played in bar. I had to see who this was sounding so very much like Eric Burdon himself.

And then I was smitten! Thirty-six years later I am still smitten 🙂
